Grow Your Audience by Planning for the Long Term [5M 20]

Unlike Wade Harman who was able to find success on the internet pretty freaking quickly most marketers will find that it actually takes YEARS before you  really start to make serious money online.

YES

You can go from nothing to earning thousands on the internet by building a niche site like I did last year or like Spencer Haws does on the regular but you need to know HOW to do it.

AND

You need to do something extremely important:

 

YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION TODAY

 

It’s like cleaning out the garage or painting the house or raking the leaves or doing the taxes.

Anything IMPORTANT takes serious effort has some “perceived” drawbacks.

For some reason your default setting is to procrastinate and put it off until later but all that does is GUARANTEE that your future will be filled with MORE important stuff to do.

Waiting until tomorrow to do what you can accomplish today is a recipe for complacency.

This is the best way to get used to STAYING where you are.

 

I’m calling this out because I know that some people fear success so much that they actually sabotage themselves.  It’s crazy sounding but the sooner you realize you’re doing this the sooner you can move past this hurdle and move on to your successful lifestyle.

 

Why do you need to take action today?

 

#1 – Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

I wrote on shoemoney about how Beyonce was announced as the headline performer for the Super Bowl months before the game was played. This means the negotiations for this deal happened well in advance of the big announcement.

Recently her husband Jay-Z announced that his new album will be launched via SAMSUNG on July 4th.

Huge deals like these take time to put together.

This is why it’s critical that you constantly take action today.

You never quite know exactly how long it will take for you to put together YOUR big DEAL.

You do want to do something BIG right?

 

#2 – You will learn by doing.

In order to become a successful entrepreneur you have to accept the fact that you HAVE to change.

Obviously you don’t know how to be successful now or you would be successful NOW.

The best advice I can give you is to tell you that you will learn what YOU need to know by doing it.

NOT by reading blogs like this one although I hope to inspire and motivate you to take action.

EXAMPLE.  Yesterday I tasted my first self grown carrot that I planted as a seed early this year.  I now KNOW that I planted them too close together because they came out kinda small.  If I would have waited to plant these carrots then today I would still not possess this knowledge.

 

#3 – Today’s money comes from yesterday’s effort.

If you want to get paid today for today’s effort then you probably want a JOB.

If you don’t know the acronym for JOB it’s:  J.ust O.ver B.roke.

Shout out to the day laborers worldwide who are getting screwed by companies paying the same wages today as 10 years ago.  It’s damn near impossible to get ahead under these circumstances.

However, if you really want to earn some serious money then you want to get paid today for what you did yesterday and last week and last month and last year.

Like the hair care niche site that Lisa Irby built.  It generates money today but she didn’t build that site today she built it many months ago.

The value you create today will pay off in the future the money you receive today comes from your effort in the past.

5M Step #2 – Grow your audience by reviewing Google Analytics performance:

Last week the percent of new visitors increased and the number of pages they viewed increase slightly but everything else was down a little except average visit duration which took a dive after being up over 70% in the previous week.

Here are my results for last week:

In order to grow your audience you have to review your performance weekly by comparing last week to the previous week using Google Analytics.

These are the 7 important metrics that you want to target for growth:

GREEN = GOOD

RED = BAD

 

In order to say your blog is growing you should have 4 of the 7 metrics above in the GREEN.

I have been publishing 5M reports for 20 weeks and only ONCE was I able to get ALL 7 metrics in the green.

 

5M Step #2 – Take action to grow your audience by focusing on the 7 key metrics:

I hate to see Avg. Visit Duration take such a big hit from last week but other than that the performance was basically flat.  Down a little but mostly flat.

 

THE GOOD NEWS:

  • Pages / Visit [QUALITATIVE]: UP 0.93% after being UP 11.44% the previous week..
  • % New Visits [QUALITATIVE]: UP 7.77% after being UP 7.62%  the previous week.

 

THE BAD NEWS: 

  • Avg. Visit Duration [QUALITATIVE]:  DOWN 42.17% after being UP 76.27% the previous week.
  • Visits [QUANTITATIVE]: DOWN 5.04% after being DOWN -34.07%  the previous week.  
  • Unique Visitors [QUANTITATIVE]: DOWN 1.02% after being DOWN 31.36%  the previous week.
  • Pageviews [QUANTITATIVE]: DOWN 4.16% after being DOWN 26.53%  the previous week.
  • Bounce Rate [QUALITATIVE]: UP 0.83% after being UP 2.33% the previous week.

 

QUALITATIVE METRICS:

Reflect the perceived quality of your site by visitors. This is how you can accomplish subjective goals using objective analysis.

Quality content should be supported by qualitative stats.

It’s good to see Pages/Visit and % New Visits increasing for the second week in a row.  This means that more of the people that found the site last week are new and everyone together viewed more pages per visit.  It’s hard to claim you have a quality site if your pages per visit is very low.

Its not good seeing Avg. Visit Duration down but it’s expected after such a huge spike in the previous week.  If you compare it net to net then AVD is moving in the right direction it’s just down substantially from the highs that were up over 70%.

Bounce rate is basically flat but I would like to see it moving at this one or two percent rate in the GREEN.

 

 

QUANTITATIVE METRICS:

Are a result of your advertising, marketing, and referrals.

They simply measure the quantity of people who actually show up to your site.

100% of the quantity of traffic you will receive will come from four primary sources:

  • Search
  • Referral
  • Direct
  • Email 

These sources result in Visits, Unique Visits, and Pageviews.

It’s not good seeing all three were down last week even though very slightly they were all in the red.

I do not run any advertising for your online biz and I have cut back on comment posting so there haven’t been any huge drivers for traffic.

I have also been very busy getting projects completed for clients.

However, it’s interesting seeing how the sites been doing basically “fending for itself” not too bad.

    It’s DEFINITELY critical for people to take action.

    I can’t tell you how many of my friends have great ideas, but sit on them for YEARS, simply not doing anything because they want to “perfect” things or “work them out” before putting it out to the public.
