Grow your audience in spite of your own issues, problems, and mistakes.
Welcome to The Monday Morning Momentum Marketing Manual #22.
You can also find all of the previous 5M reports here.
You might be shocked at how difficult it is to accomplish success as a freelance entrepreneur.
This is probably why most people don’t bother trying.
They’re like, “man ain’t nobody got time for all that entrepreneur stuff, I’ll rather work my hours and just go home.”
It is hard man, SERIOUSLY.
It takes absolutely everything you’ve got and THEN SOME.
You have to put fort a tremendous amount of effort first to understand what the heck you need to do.
After that you have to put “ass to chair” and actually do the work.
THEN you have to do SOME research and review what you have done, make adjustments, and do it all over again even better.
This cycle has to be completed consistently week after week, month after month while dealing with paltry results that only serve to remind you that what you are doing is NOT WORKING.
Then you finally get a flash of light.
Some people start sharing your posts.
You start getting some comments on your blog articles.
You start getting some followers on social media.
You see people subscribing to your email list.
Somebody awesome links to you.
You stop and think.
Man, I think it’s working, you’re like “Hey, Mom look –I’m doing it.”
Then you realize that you just screwed up something majorly, and you’ve made yourself look like an idiot.
This is what happened to me last week.
On one hand:
A HUGE accomplishment was reached with:
- Over 300 email subscribers to Your Online Biz.
- Passed the 10,000 visits mark.
- Passing the 20,000 total page views mark.
On the other:
I’m human so:
- I made a BIG mistake and ended up spamming MOST of my email subscribers for weeks and I didn’t even know. I modified my aweber email account with new messages and I didn’t know when I changed the order that this one particular message would keep getting sent over and over again. What made it so bad was it was the one email where I was offering to help out my subscribers. I was like DAMN IT MAN.
I felt bad so I apologized.
With so many clowns and generally FOS non-bloggers out there I definitely don’t want people to think that I’m one of them.
I work waaaay too hard.
That’s why I wanted to share this with you.
In your path to victory and ultimate success you will realize that you have to overcome even your own best efforts.
I changed my email message sequence specifically to improve what I was doing and ended up causing some problems for myself instead.
This is why it’s so important to get started and give-give, give it all you got.
The sooner you begin the sooner you will get through these obstacles that lay ahead for you.
There’s no blog post out there that you can read that will prevent what you will do to yourself.
Just learn from it and keep going.
Ha haaaaaaaaaaa! What you know about this? Shout out to Generation X remember the skate rink?
5M Step #2 – Grow your audience by reviewing Google Analytics performance:
Last week substantially more visitors and unique visitors stopped by the site.
This is the first and most basic sign of blog growth.
When more people show up to your blog this week from last week consistently your blog or website is growing.
This is the second week in a row that I have more visits to my site, so it is now officially growing again.
Here’s my stats from last week:
5M Step #2 – Take action to grow your audience by focusing on the 7 key metrics:
Current status: GROWING
Current run: 2 weeks
Current record: 11 weeks
In order to grow your audience consistently over time you have to focus on the 7 core metrics from the Google analytics audience report.
These 7 statistics are the strongest indicators of your website or blog growth AND quality.
GREEN = GOOD. GROWTH & QUALITY
RED = BAD. DECLINE & ‘MEH’ or DISINTEREST
The 5M series is all about helping you grow systematically by reviewing performance weekly.
THE GOOD NEWS:
- Visits [QUANTITATIVE]: UP 3.00% after being UP 3.10% the previous week.
- Unique Visitors [QUANTITATIVE]: UP 10.75% after being DOWN 4.62% the previous week.
- % New Visits [QUANTITATIVE]: UP 10.87% after being DOWN 10.21% the previous week.
THE BAD NEWS:
- Avg. Visit Duration [QUALITATIVE]: DOWN 50.54% after being UP 21.71% the previous week.
- Bounce Rate [QUALITATIVE]: DOWN 15.92 after being DOWN -3.72% the previous week.
- Pageviews [QUANTITATIVE]: DOWN 10.91% after being DOWN 4.14% the previous week.
- Pages / Visit [QUALITATIVE]: DOWN 13.50% after being DOWN 7.02% the previous week..
Statistics measure the quality of your site.
It’s the best indicator that anyone can use to determine how much people really like your content.
Its not a good seeing ALL 4 of the quality indicators DOWN substantially from last week.
This is definitely a sign that an update is needed so here’s what I’m going to do:
1. Update my menu
2. Update the side bar.
3. Post some guest posts
4. Publish new content, look out for a new podcast episode.
Statistics measure the quantity of people that visit your site.
This simple count is a measure of how well your marketing is working.
The more people you invite to your party online the more people will show up.
It’s always a good feeling to see all 3 of these important stats in the GREEN.
Last week more visits and unique visits showed up and the % of new visits increased.
I do not advertise or use any paid promotion for Your Online Biz so all of the increase must have come from social shares, search engine traffic, or word of mouth.
To keep this going next week here’s what I’m going to do:
1. Write some guest posts.
3. Share stuff on social media.
FACT. You are your biggest asset and liability.
It’s all good though.
Just get out of your own way enough to accomplish something worth while for the people visiting your site and before you know it you’ll start seeing results.
Don’t worry about making mistakes even if you SPAM your first 300 subscribers on accident.
Just keep it real with them about what happened and get back in the saddle.
Also, please don’t let me discourage you on starting because of how hard it is just know that you are designed to do what’s difficult.
If it was easy it would already be done or it wouldn’t pay worth a crap.
