How I dominated Google Page 1 in 2012

You may have heard recently that Google changed the way it indexes websites.  This wasn’t a periodic update this was a change to the algorithm impacting the search results dramatically for lots of people.  Due to this people began to worry that you could no longer rank for keywords very quickly in Google.  I am at heart a skeptic, not by choice but by experience.  If you have been around the block a few times you learn a thing or two.  Or should I say there a some things you will never forget, like measure twice cut once.  So I like to see proof before I believe any very impressive claim.  If you search for “how to rank #1 google” you’ll get who knows how many results. Its like one for every dollar the U.S. Government owes or something, its crazy.  Which one should you follow?  I would hope you start with the websites with proof.

Here’s mine:

People get caught up sometimes in all of the SEO technical details of the Google algorithm but fail to consider the overall intent.  That is to simply return to users what they are actually looking for.  Google calls this relevance.  Internet marketers who are trying to game the system and force outcomes unnaturally are exactly the people Google wants to block.  The content that is relevant to the search is what should be returned.

I created the #IBCT International Blogger Championship Tournament for this specific purpose.  I wanted to have something to discuss of value that people could relate to, like choosing the best blogger in the world.  I created a process I called comparative-competitive analysis where each of the blogs would be compared and visitors could vote for the winner in each of the contests.   The contest itself was an experiment to prove this concept and it worked.  My goal was to bring attention to the #IBCT tag which would be added to all posts on the tournament.  The goal was by the end of the event the website would be ranked #1 for the search term “#IBCT”.  I’m very happy to say this was successful.  To verify the results click here.

Special thanks to all of the top bloggers in the world who commented, ret-weeted, and shared posts on the #IBCT it was this activity that I believed sealed the deal in terms of Google page one rankings.

Did you get a chance to check out the #IBCT?  What do you think about the results?  Who do you think should have won?
