Exclusive Interview with Lisa Irby the founder of 2CreateAWebSite.com

What I learned from Lisa Irby Q&A with the founder of 2CreateAWebSite.com

This week I’m pleased to feature Lisa Irby the founder of 2CreateAWebSite.com.

Don’t miss the last episode, What I learned from Ari Herzog – Q&A with the founder of AriHerzog.com

This is the eleventh edition of the What I learned interview series.

Chances are if you’ve spent any time searching the internet for “how to build a website” you probably found Lisa Irby.

I’ve been following her blog for so long I don’t even know when I started to be honest.

All I can say is I remember reading her articles in my cube when I was still working in corporate America so it’s been at least since 2006.

I wanted to share her story with you because, it’s AWESOME.

Here’s some quick stats:

  • Domain Registered: JAN 2002

  • Alexa Traffic rank: 9,781

  • YouTube subscribers: 50,295

  • Twitter followers: 13,869

  • Facebook likes: 10,910

  • Google+ circles: 3,184

THE word that I’ll probably use in every article I write this year.

It really is that important for success, here’s what I mean.

If you’ve been following Lisa Irby then you know she’s been warning people for YEARS about being dependent on GOOGLE or other search engines for website traffic.

Even before Google started releasing their dangerous algorithm animals like Panda and Penguin she was making videos explaining how to get traffic in a very different way.

When others were focused on WHAT to do she focused on HOW to do it.

When so called “guru’s” said  “It’s all about back links”; she was saying YOU should be focused on what would make someone want to share your content on social media.

When other bloggers were trying to charm and impress Google for search traffic; she talked about how important it is for you to be personable and make a genuine impression with YOUR audience.

Needless to say this strategy has paid off big time as her YouTube channel just recently blew past the 50,000 subscriber mark.

I told you it’s AWESOME didn’t I?

Ok, alright enough of me.

Now it’s time to go to the interview with Lisa Irby the founder of 2CreateAWebSite.com

Most websites fail after only a few months but this past January was the 11th year anniversary for your domain 2createawebsite.com.

Unlike some other bloggers’s I’ve interviewed you actually started posting content back then and have been growing ever since.

In 11 words or less can you explain how did you did it?

By providing tutorials in laymen’s terms with a personal touch.

Your blog is one of a handful that was launched before Facebook, Twitter, and even Myspace.
Can you share a lesson that you learned about content marketing from promoting your site on all these different networks?

Each site definitely requires a different strategy and it takes time to learn how to approach them all.

For example, I find that Twitter is best alerting my visitors of new content, and answering quick questions. However, with Facebook I find that it’s a better place to have more in-depth conversations.

So I like to post more thought-provoking questions on my Facebook page to get people talking.

Finish this sentence:

Some times I wanna _______ my blog and ____________.

Some times I wanna re-focus my blog and make it more targeted.

When I started blogging, I didn’t really have a direct strategy for it — other than to have another content site to make money. I already had a static site so I just began blogging aimlessly.

Fortunately, over time, I was able to develop a rhythm and traffic.

Having said that, sometimes I wish I had narrowed the focus down more instead of just writing about so many different aspects of Internet marketing.

With my newest hair site, I’ve definitely learned how much more engaged your audience can be if you really narrow down your site.

With the pending demise of RSS and potentially feedburner what do you think the future holds for email marketing?

With Feedburner specifically, I think people will realize the importance of using a more stable list service instead of relying on something that is free.

If Feedburner dies, I don’t think people will move away from email, I just think they will find other alternatives.

Some people believe email marketing is dead, but the number of people who still sign up to get my updates via email clearly shows it’s alive and well.

How do you feel about young people today who are seriously considering internet marketing instead of going to college due to the job market and debt concerns?

I’m fine with it.

I went into this straight out of college because I fell in love with every aspect of this business right away.

As long as they enjoy it and understand it is challenging just like any other business, then I say go for it.

But make sure you are doing it because you truly love the components of the business — not just because the job market is tough.

What I learned from Lisa Irby the founder of 2CreateAWebSite.com

#1 – Use Strategy

“Blogging aimlessly.”

We’ve all been there, the key is to NOT STAY THERE.

If you want to move onward and upward then you need to be strategic with your content marketing plan.

This means understanding important things like WHY you are choosing the domain name you have.

What article titles should you write?

Which keywords should you target and HOW should you do it?

#2 – Narrow your focus.

” I wish I had narrowed the focus down more instead of just writing about so many different aspects”

This quote from Lisa should tell you something.

The topic that you choose for your online business is critical.

#3 – Keep it real.

If you think I’m joking watch this video from 2007 and tell me if you think Lisa has been keeping it real.

I want to thank Lisa Irby for taking the time to do this interview.

I know you could have done a million and one other things like producing another YouTube video for your 50,000 subscribers, or building another profitable niche site, but instead you shared KNOWLEDGE and I appreciate it.

That’s it for this episode.

Hyper target that niche! I learned this from Lisa and my own experience. Instead of blogging to blog, or make money, solve problems from a specific niche.
