What I Learned from Neil Patel Exclusive Interview with the Founder of Quicksprout.com

This week I’m extremely excited to feature this guest post by Sri Ram a 15 year old blogger who landed this exclusive interview with NEIL PATEL the founder of Quicksprout.com, and several other internet properties.

This is the thirty-third edition of the what I learned interview series.

Earlier this year after untold hours of research I announced the top 256 blogs in the world and Quicksprout.com ranked #1 by a very wide margin.

Anyone who is considering taking blogging seriously must know about Neil Patel.

Here’s what Wikipedia says about him:

“Neil Patel is a Seattle based entrepreneur, angel investor, and analytics expert. He is best known for his work in digital marketing and as the cofounder of the analytics companies KISSmetrics and Crazy Egg.”

For those who don’t know, here’s some info to consider:

  1. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web.
  2. Forbes says he is one of the top 10 online marketers.
  3. Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies in the world.
  4. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and one of the top 100 entrepreneurs under the age of 35 by the United Nations.
  5. Neil has also been awarded Congressional Recognition from the United States House of Representatives.
  6. At the age of 21, Neil was named a top 100 blogger by Technorati.

Okay, let’s get to the interview with Mr.Neil.

You’ve worked with tech giants like Amazon, NBC, HP, Viacom, Tech Crunch. What made them deal with you and what was the deal?

When I go into any business I not only show them what’s wrong, but I try show them how much money I can make them by fixing those errors. Typically this involves diving into their business model and stats, but with some hard work you too can create financial projections for potential clients.

What is your disillusionment in your business and blogging?

In business I wish we moved a lot faster. I think we do better than most of our competitors, but we can still move faster.

In blogging I need to generate higher quality content.

What makes a company successful financially?

We focus on keeping our cost low, and we continually acquire new customers through marketing.

What types of posts makes a reader say “Great post!” and how can we achieve that?

Posts that are actionable and thorough. If someone can read one of your content pieces and know what to do next, then you are off to a good start.

 Neil Patel Quote

Where do you promote your posts after publishing and how frequently do you promote your old posts?

I don’t promote old posts too frequently. As for new ones, I follow this method.

Your posts on Quick Sprout are really informative and they are the much-wanted kind posts. How do you get ideas for your posts?

From you and other readers. :)

People email me blogging topics every day and I pick a few of them and then blog.

If your readers aren’t submitting ideas to you, try using tools like Qualaroo to generate ideas. Surveying your readers is a great start.

Do you think that popups suits every blog? How could we make them less annoying to readers?

It suits almost every blog, but not all. By using cookies you can control how often they appear.

What’s your working schedule? What do you do in your leisure time?

I actually break down my life here.

Which social networking platform worked best for you?

Facebook and LinkedIn do extremely well. I also focus on the b2b audience which is why LinkedIn does well.

PPC or SEO – which would you choose?

Both. As long as they are profitable, why not do both of them.

What’s your favorite mobile OS?

iOS. I haven’t tried an android phone yet though.

What’s your favorite book?

The Dip by Seth Godin.

Who is your business inspiration?

Elon Musk. The guy has crazy ambitions and he is making them reality.

What are the potential risks in blogging?

Publish bad information that can make you look bad. This can also taint your brand.

What’s your favorite website? How frequent you visit them?

TechCrunch. I read it 4 to 5 times a day. More so skim..

Sriram :
What’s your favorite gadget?

Control 4. It more so works with existing gadgets and it is home automation.

What I learned from Neil Patel:

  • Have a goal before doing anything makes it easier to achieve.
  • Showing off is not the only way to become popular.
  • You will get what you want if you help others get what they want.
  • Hard work combined with smart work gives success.
  • Everyone was once a beginner; Never underestimate anyone.

  14. Gail Gardner says:

Great scoop, Darnell. You should take the best quotes and a photo of Neil Patel and turn them into images on Canva. Then share across social media and pin to the top of your Twitter account. (Tag me and I’ll share.)

Neil is the real deal. My ultimate goal is to be able to do for very small businesses what he does for big brands.

One thing we need from Neil is to always have images in what he writes. More than once he has written something truly exceptional (usually on KISSmetrics) that I knew wasn’t going to get the attention it deserved because there was no pinnable, shareable image in the content.
