Success Story: How a Brand New Freelancer Got Published on ProBlogger.net

Since I launched YourOnline.biz a few years ago I’ve learned a TON about internet marketing and online businesses and I want you to benefit from my journey–however I also discovered a MASSIVE PROBLEM for me–the teacher wannabe:

You see, the truth is EXPERIENCE is still the best teacher. Try as hard as I may there’s really no way around this immovable object, even if you are an unstoppable force. Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaa!

That’s why I wanted to feature a success story today from someone who until very recently was in the same position as you:

  1. They haven’t built an online business making tens of thousands of dollars every month - YET
  2. They haven’t landed the highest paying freelance writing gig - YET
  3. They haven’t “figured it all out”  online – YET

However, what “they” have done is something that you should pay very close attention to, ESPECIALLY if you are new to the online game.

Hassan

Here’s my discussion with Hassan on how he got started in this awesome but endlessly frustrating industry.

Darnell
What made you interested in blogging/writing?

Hassan
I’ve always had a thing for words and writing, but blogging seemed amazing.

The fact that you could write something and have tons of people immediately view and reply to it
blew my socks right off.

Darnell
When did you write your first blog post? (what platform etc) (Did you go through the ‘content mills’?)

I wrote my first blog post 2 years ago on WordPress. It felt so hard and so weird. Then again, almost everything is at first. It was such a nooby post that I’ve now removed it from my site.

Hassan
When/how did you hear about YourOnline.biz?

About a year ago. I remember floating around the internet on my phone. You know? Like humans tend to from time to time. I came across Penelope Trunk’s website, and listened to the interview where you got “called out“.

Darnell
What did you find on the site that helped you?

Hassan
I loved listening to and reading the interviews you did. I devoured your posts on freelancing.

Darnell
How long did it take you to finally get your first guest post published on a popular site?

Hassan
Uh oh, this is embarrassing. Don’t laugh, okay?

It took me over 6 months.

Darnell
What would you do differently if you had to start over from scratch right now? (what would you keep the same?)

Hassan
If I had to start from scratch right aye?

Well, the thing I’d keep the same is that I’d get help.

What I’d change is that I’d get help immediately.

I tossed away years. Just because I thought I could make it on my own. Talking to fellow freelancers further along the path like yourself is what I should have done.

Online courses and programs where I could get detailed feedback on my work and progress from experienced people where the biggest accelerators of my growth!

Darnell
What was the most difficult part of the process? Explain.

Hassan
This probably sounds corny, but it’s true (for me anyway). The most difficult part was… (and sometimes still is) acting despite doubt and fear.

I’d worry about my writing. Worry about my website. Worry about my experience. Worry. Worry. You name it, I was worrying about it.

However, taking small deliberate steps despite my doubts allowed me to overpower my demons and gain confidence in my abilities.

Darnell
Can you talk about something in the process of freelancing that went completely different than you expected?

Hassan
Yup, and that’s clients.

More specifically, getting clients.

In my mind, getting clients was a mammoth task that would require tons of guest posts all over the internet.

Turns out it took much less than expected. Much. Much. Less

Darnell
What advise do you have for the ‘pre-newbies’ that still haven’t taken that first step yet?

Hassan
F*** your emotions.

Seriously. Do not let doubt and fear become an obstacle. Act in spite of your fear.

Figure out your next step and shuffle a little closer to it each day. If you do that, you
almost guarantee your success.

Remember: The pro’s are only pro’s because they endured the noob stage long enough.
