The 5 ways your blog should be saying Thank You.

Thank you.

Is such an easy thing to say and it means so much, yet few people understand the risk of not using these two little words on your website.

Just like few people in Chicago understand that you should say thank you to the person that walks in the building before you and holds the door open.

-But hey, that’s another topic.

Thanking your visitors is not only common courtesy but it’s also an outstanding opportunity to connect in ways that you couldn’t have  imagined.

It’s almost like the ah ha moment you get when you actually start connecting with people on social media.

You’re sitting there like, dang now I see why so many people are walking around staring at their smart phones.

It works the same way when you review your statistics and you notice the content that your visitors are viewing much longer than your site average.

This was one of the things I learned from Steve Scotttaking time to thank your visitors can pay off, huge.

 

Here are the 5 best ways for your blog to say Thank You:

 

1. Say thank you after a comment.

The point of a blog is to build interaction while growing your audience around your content.

One of the key signs that you’re building engagement with your audience is blog comments.

Most bloggers think the only thing they should do when they see a new comment is to reply quickly in order to start a conversation.

Yeah, you still need to do that but nowadays you need to do more.

Here’s the steps:  

  1. Create a new page titled, “Thank you for posting a comment” or something similar.
  2. On this page include:
    • A personal message from you saying, Thank You for commenting on my site.
    • Your email opt-in form.  I recommend Aweber for email management.
      This is a great time to ask your visitor to subscribe.
      However, if you want your visitors that post comments to join your email list don’t use any other links on this page.
      Try to keep their attention focused on the email form.
    • Another option is to include internal links to the most viewed pages on your site.
      If they liked this page show them some other pages that are popular based on your performance statistics.
    • Monetization options:
      • Affiliate links.  This is a good time to get them to take a look at your best affiliate offer.
      • PPC ads (adsense). This is a good spot to publish an advertisement since you have their attention.
      • For best results DO NOT use ads in combination with any other options above.
        The more options you give your visitors the less likely they’ll click.
  3. Modify WordPress to redirect users to this new page after they post a comment.
    • Backup your wordpress install and database before you make any changes.
    • Customize your Functions.php file or hire someone to do it for you.
    • Test a plugin like this one to do this functionality for you if it doesn’t work delete it and find one that does.

 

2. Say Thank you after an email subscription.

After a visitor subscribes to your site you have an outstanding opportunity but you don’t want to waste it with links to your content or affiliate offers.

You definitely don’t wan’t to publish any ads on this page unless you’re more concerned with ad clicks than email confirmations.  (You should be more concerned with subscriptions for long term success by the way.)

Here’s the steps:

  1. Create a page titled, “Thank you for joining my email list” or similar. On this page include:
    1. A very short message from you thanking your new subscribers and urging them to check their email.
    2. A picture of you.
    3. An image of the confirmation message that will be coming to their email inbox.
  2. If you don’t already have one create an Aweber account, and setup your first list.
  3. Set up your WEB FORMS / BASIC SETTINGS to redirect to this new page.  This is the page that users will see once they enter their email address on your subscribe form.

 

3. Say Thank you after an email subscription confirmation.

You didn’t think everyone who subscribes to your email list will actually confirm their subscription did you?

I hope not because they won’t.

Each niche and blog is different but you can expect a given percent of your subscribers will simply never open your email to confirm their address.

This is why you want to thank the visitors that actually took the time to dig through their inbox, open your message, and click the confirm link.

Here’s the steps:

  1. Create a page titled, “Thank you for confirming your email address” or similar.
  2. On this page include:
    1. A very sincere thank you for confirming your email message in a paragraph or so about what the first message you’ll be sending them will look like.
    2. An image of what the first email they’ll receive will look like.  Free Ebook, newsletter, etc.
    3. MONETIZATION:  A link to your #1 affiliate offer. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER LINKS ON THIS PAGE.
      This works because this page will be viewed much longer than your site average.
      It will also convert sales at a higher rate than your site average or your custom landing pages.

 

4. Say thank you after they contact you.

I’ll admit that visitors expect to see a thank you page after they fill out your contact form.

This presents a different type of opportunity.  Now you have a chance to exceed their expectations.

Here’s the steps:

  1. Create a new page titled, “Thank you for contacting us” or similar.
  2. Use aweber to manage your contact form and set up your WEB FORM/ BASIC SETTINGS to redirect visitors to your thank you page.
  3. Modify your email confirmation message to coordinate with a ‘contact us’ type of follow up.
    Note the difference between someone that fills out your contact form and a typical email subscriber.
    Update your email content accordingly.

 

5. Say thank you after a social share.

*This is the future. 

Think about your everyday life.

You always make the best impressions when they are unexpectedly positive don’t you?

Who expects a personal thank you after a re-tweet, Facebook like, or Google plus one?

This is your opportunity to impress.  Is it easy to do?  no.  Can it be done?  Yes.

Here’s the steps:

  1. Create a new page titled, “Thank you for sharing on social media” or similar.
  2. Build this page like your “Thank you for posting a comment” page above except update your text for the social media interaction.
  3. Contact the designer of the social media sharing plugin that you’re using.  Explain the functionality that you want and ask them to build you a custom version.
    If you can’t get through to the designer of your favorite social sharing plugin contact another and then another until you reach someone willing to help you.
  4. Until you can find someone to customize a plugin for your blog consider using a premium opt in plugin to boost your interaction in the meanwhile.  This will likely save you money anyway as custom plugins that actually work, cost hundreds if not thousands to design.
