Why Mike Elgan is Wrong about Blogging

Mike Elgan is a very popular blogger on Google+ you should add him to your circles, he actually does share interesting stuff.

However, he’s wrong about one very important thing…

BLOGGING ON GOOGLE PLUS

I have written about this in the past so when I noticed this discussion continuing I felt it was time again to reiterate some important points.

DON’T MISS:  Stop Working for Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ for free.

 

The point that Mike makes is basically you should use Google+ as your blog.

My point is you should blog on YOUR OWN domain and then share your stuff on Google+ and other social media sites.

 

Now I’m no big shot, YET <smile> as a matter of fact IF I had 25,000 followers on Google+ WHICH I DON’T  Mike would still have more than A HUNDRED TIMES more followers than me.   

 

I’m just trying to bring your attention to a very important concept that is being left out of the discussion…

 

OWNERSHIP

 

It has privileges. 

When you share an article or post a comment on a blog you are literally making the site more valuable for the owner of that domain.

When you upload ANOTHER picture of a CAT to Google+ you are doing the same thing for the owners of $GOOG.

The content that you add increases the value of the internet property for the OWNER of the site.

Why would you want to give this value away when VALUE > MONEY?

 

This is why I spend so much energy trying to get people to use STRATEGY when it comes to blogging, freelance writing, or internet marketing.

Look at it like this.

Imagine that you built the very first multi-user blog, lets call it a social media platform, then you grew it to millions of users all over the world, and then what?

You realized that people don’t like to use your system as much as they used to so what do you do?  CASH OUT and SELL IT FOR MILLIONS.

If you haven’t figured out what system I’m talking about it’s MYSPACE and as a matter of fact Tom Anderson who started MySpace is one of the most followed people on Google+.

He’s has about twice the number of followers as Mike Elgan but not twice the amount of money.

Tom made millions from selling his domain, MySpace.com in 2011 I’m not sure how much Mike has earned from blogging on Google+.

My point is it’s not what you do but how you do it.

 

Ok, here’s ANOTHER way to look at it.

The top earners in the #IBCT earn passive income every single month from content that they have already written and published on their sites.   The International Blogger Championship Tournament is all about learning from the best of the best.

Pat Flynn has been earning over $40,000 a month for MONTHS and last month he cleared over $100,000 all from the blogs HE OWNS.

Spencer Haws builds niche websites that earn hundreds of dollars every month.

Steve Scott has been earning six figures per year perpetually just from running the blogs that he owns.

Imagine how much money Mike is leaving on the table?

This week is the 34th week of 2013.

If you have been posting on Google+ at the rate of Mike Elgan who averages about 5 posts per day conservatively you would have shared 5 x 7 days a week x 34 weeks = 1190 posts.

Think about that for a second.

That’s over a thousand pieces of content that you are sharing into a system that you could have profited from.

Talk about Opportunity Cost I call it opportunity LOST.

Imagine if Mike published HALF of his Google+ shares on HIS blog first and then shared them on Google+ he would have 595 posts that would drive traffic back to his domain.

He could then make money from PPC ads or from selling affiliate products like Spencer Haws.

This would definitely work for Mike because he actually does share useful stuff that other people often re-share which would result in even more traffic and PROFIT for his online business.

 

In Closing.

I won’t even mention the fact that your Google, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram account can be deleted or suspended for any reason.  Someone “in charge” could make a mistake or whatever and then BOOM you lose access to your precious social media followers.

Everything YOU built would be gone.

You definitely don’t want to fall for this, you should see how people react when they realize their account is suspended or deletedIt’s sad and hilarious at the same damn time.

However, It’s very difficult to suspend your domain, someone would need proof that you have done something wrong first and then as the owner of the property you have the right to defend yourself against these allegations.

Also, I won’t mention the privacy issue where Google has come out and said there is no expectation of privacy.

When you own your own domain you also own your email so Google can’t read it you only have to worry about the NSA spying on you but that’s another issue, shout out to Edward Snowden.  (Then, again as the owner of your domain you can assert your right to privacy which is very hard to do with the FREE systems that you agree to “use”.)

    What I actually find hard to do is to NOT believe you. I kind of felt a bit uneasy with the thought… not the action yet… but the thought that someone could actually be contributing that much value to Google (or any other social media for that matter), in spite of the clear and glaring dangers of doing so!

    OWNERSHIP… OWNERSHIP… OWNERSHIP. The 3 most important factors to online business success. The question is always, “Who owns it?”… and that’s who gets PAID!

    It’s actually possible to start with nothing, yet build a decent following on your own domain, your own website, with your own brand, in only a few weeks. My site http://www.WingsToSuccess.com only kicked off in late October and I am adding 6-12 new email subscribers each day, already.

    I’m amazed by this – as I have done relatively very little to promote the site. At this rate I will have 1,000 email subscribers by April!

    Play the big boys at their own game, throw them a few titbits here and there for sure, but don’t be their “useful idiot”.

  3. Why blog on Google+? Why not make your own Google+, meaning, your “blog”.

    Google is making money anyways from your content. It is better that you make your own blog and claim money for it.

    Mike is correct in his argument that a blog is personal, but I am sure Mike can enjoy the same number of followers if he had a blog of his own. It is up to him whether he wants to monetize his blog. And why this inclination towards Google +? Why not Twitter or Facebook? Also, there is nothing personal when you blog on Google+. You can’t even claim ownership of the content that you post on Google+.

    I would advise Mike that he makes his own internet property i.e. his blog, rather than creating value for Google for free.

  4. After admittedly only skimming the discussion,I get the impression that we are dealing with different strokes for different folks. If Mike just wants numbers and popularity, etc, he’s on the right track. If Darnell is after big bucks, he’s obviously going where the money can be found. Can they both be right? I suspect that the “bee in the bonnet” is Mike’s recommending that everyone follow his path to “success”. Does he clearly define what that success is? Yes – it is huge numbers of followers. Darnell is obviously more interested in getting paid for his services. Perhaps untangling the Gordian knot for a new blogger is defining her/his goals and choosing the method (platform)that is most appropriate. My very new blog is meant to be an additional service to the 1100 plus readers of a quarterly newsletter. The “hook” is to send bloggers to the website where I sell books, resources, and other “assists” to lovers of solitude. So what I offer is a ministry for which I gladly accept donations. The profit margin isn’t my first concern but I’m quite pleased to see it getting wider. So? Define your goals. Choose platforms accordingly. Offer good service and you’ll be well rewarded.     I think Mike is making some good points in his article (and in his comment below), but I still don’t quite get the concept of blogging for the sake of blogging alone. He says, “if you want to blog — for love (or self-promotion), not for money — Google+ is the best place to do it.” But what is self-promotion for if it’s not a way to make a living in the end? Is it just for the sake of fame then? I doubt that’s what he means, but if it doesn’t bring any profit, then I’m not sure what else such recognition could accomplish. Good point on ownership too, Darnell.

      At the end of the day time is money. Posting stuff on Google+ just to get popular makes no sense especially in 2014 when people have taxes to pay and healthcare expenses to cover, who can afford to mess around on social media all day for free?

      Just think even right now I’ve gotta come up with new registration money for my vehicles that’s another $300 just for it being a new year.

      Same car remind you but I have to pay $300 again this year just to tell the state that yep this is still my car.

  6. I’m just getting started trying to make money via my blog. When I first set up the blog, it was to try to earn a reputation as an expert so that people would hire me, but I don’t want to just trade dollars for hours.

    When I do write a post, I share it on the various social media sites, but I’m nowhere near getting the kind of traffic that others do.

    As far as the G+ vs ownership debate goes, I don’t see how a person could not have their own site, based solely on the fact that none of these social media platforms will remain unchanged and some will ultimately go away, like you pointed out.

    Great post, Darnell, and I agree with you – it’s far better to base your business on your own bit of turf in cyberspace, rather than blogging on rented land. I’m all for sharing stuff and commenting on social media, but that can never replace the valuable online real estate you have by owning your own blog.

    The debate of whether to blog on your own website or on other social media sites is great but what i think is blogging on your own website is of more benefit than blogging on other social media sites. The reason is that the content of your own website is later distributed to this other social media sites. And besides bookmarking is more easily done when blogging on your own site.

    You both make good points. I think, in the end, it depends on what you value the most. I’m a strong believer in ownership, but there’s nothing wrong with using Google+, Facebook, or Twitter as an outpost.

    If you are a prolific content creator, you can do both. Write to your blog as a primary platform and use Google+ as a secondary platform. You can earn your readership through the secondary and funnel your traffic to your primary vehicle. Make them work together.

        Darnell, I love a good controversy. I actually do lean more your direction. I would never abandon my own property to build up value in somebody else’s, but I do see some value in adding original content to your social media outposts. Google+ is a dynamic opportunity for a lot of content creators. It does have its own SEO value, but bloggers shouldn’t give up their own blogs to chase it.

    Before you go off doing something rash, like agreeing with Darnell, please understand the basic fact that blogging on Google+ will give you a rate of reader growth that’s 10 times what you’ll get with a stand-alone blog.

    That means that in order to gain the supposed benefits of a blog — archiving, personal branding, “control,” etc., — you’re giving up hundreds or thousands or millions of readers.

    What are we blogging for, if not to write for readers?

    I agree with you, even though I’d understand making Google+ your primary blogging platform.

    Google (as everyone knows) rules the search engines, and many people believe (not sure rightly or wrongly) that you’ll get far more SEO bang for your buck out of Google than from your own website.

    Of course, for all the reasons you mentioned, at the end of the day it’s waaaaay better to have your own website than to rely on another company’s platform.

    I can’t tell you how many people’s Squidoo lenses have been locked or suspended for no reason at all, suddenly taking away many people’s primary source of online income.

    Oh well, I guess there are those that prefer to use “other” platforms to do their blogging.

    In my opinion, I think that the right way to go is to have a blog and use G+ or whatever other major social network as a promotion platform. Obviously there are other uses for social networks, but when it comes to blogging, I have to agree with you Darnell.
